Accessible Cultural Education

Accessibility in education is practiced regularly in cultural institutions across New York and continues to be a burgeoning field within higher education scholarship. The goal of this workshop is to bring together knowledge from this field in theory and practice in order to cultivate dialogue among colleagues.

One scholar/practitioner pairing will feature Annie Leist (Art Beyond Sight and the Metropolitan Museum of Art) and Vida Sabbaghi (COPE NYC) to discuss working with artists with disabilities.

Another will feature Cynthia VandenBosch (Turnstile Tours) and Mariette Bates (CUNY School of Professional Studies), both of whom design courses about working with people with disabilities.

A third brings together JW Guido (New York Deaf Theater) and Sara Morgulis (New York City Children’s Theater) to discuss theater programs by and for individuals with different types of disabilities.

These dialogues will generate new areas for collaboration and also serve as inspiration for others working in disability and accessibility theory and practice to bridge their institutional silos. All are welcomed to join in a robust Q & A and enjoy opportunities to network with others working in disability studies and accessibility at CUNY and at cultural institutions city-wide.
