Community Event to Support International Student Instructors

Friday, February 16, 1-3pm

Last Fall, the Teaching and Learning Center conducted a survey of international students at the Graduate Center which revealed that three-quarters feel that the relationship between instructors and students at CUNY is markedly different than in their home country. Nearly two-thirds reported feeling that instructional methods were similarly unfamiliar. Over the past year, TLC staff have sought to better support the more than one thousand GC students who are registered as international students. This programming has included workshops, a focused inquiry group, and the survey mentioned above. Please join the Teaching and Learning Center on Friday, February 16, 1-3 pm, in room 3317 as we present two new programs dedicated to supporting international student instructors. We’ll  launch a site on the CUNY Academic Commons that will provide resources specifically for international students who are teaching at CUNY, as well as a group that will facilitate community among international instructors. We will also launch a new mentorship program that will connect experienced international student instructors with those teaching for the first time. Representatives from the Office of International Students office and the Wellness Center will also join us to discuss the services they offer to international students.

We encourage all international student instructors to join us, which this is your first– or fifth– semester in the classroom, and to take advantage of this opportunity to meet other international students. Those who will teach for the first time in Fall 2018 are especially encouraged to attend.

Refreshments will be provided; please RSVP through this link by Tuesday, February 13th so we can order accordingly: https://goo.gl/forms/dVxD1QThS7Y7STlI3
