Workshop: “Cleaning Data with OpenRefine”  Wednesday, April 19th, 2017 – 6:30-8:30pm

Data cleaning is an important step in any data-driven research project. Often data is harvested from diverse sources such as the web, databases, spreadsheets, text files, and countless other places. Before it is cleaned, “messy” data can suffer from a host of problems, including inconsistent encodings, formats, and missing values to name just a few. This workshop will explain how to clean a dataset using OpenRefine. OpenRefine is a tool designed to make the task of data cleaning easy. We will learn how to use OpenRefine as well as talk generally about the process of data cleaning.

Workshop: “Visualization 3”  Thursday, April 20th, 2017 – 6:30-8:30pm

Interactive web based visualizations are becoming ever more integral to sharing research to the world at large and they are largely created using the D3.js library. In this workshop, we learn about the d3 data model and its conceptualization of graphics. We will then learn how to build and customize some simple graphs in D3.js. Participation in previous workshops not required.

This workshop will be hosted by GC Digital Fellow Hannah Aizenman.

About the Workshops and the GC Digital Fellows Program: 

Part of GC Digital Initiatives and based in the GC Digital Scholarship Lab, the GC Digital Fellows Program operates as an in-house think-and-do tank for digital projects, connecting Fellows to digital initiatives throughout The Graduate Center. Digital Fellows utilize a team-based approach as they explore creative solutions for projects that can be implemented in a collaborative fashion. In the process, the Program helps build out “The Digital GC” — a vision of the Graduate Center that incorporates technology into its core research and teaching missions.
