Workshops on Exploring the Impact

of Race and Racism on Teaching

  • Are you a GC student who teaches or plans to?
  • Do you want to explore the ways in which you’ve been racialized?
  • Are you curious how this racialization affects the way you teach?

If so, join us for an evening of workshops facilitated by three highly experienced social justice educators, Durryle Brooks (Ph.D. ABD, http://loveandjusticeconsulting.com/), Diane Goodman (Ed.D. http://www.dianegoodman.com), and Causten Wollerman-Rodriguez (SJTI).

THREE workshops will take place simultaneously: one for people of color-identified students, one for white-identified students, and one for students who identify as multi-racial. We recognize POC-identified, white-identified, and multi-racial people have different needs and work to do to break down the effects of racism on their teaching. We want to create supportive spaces where people can have honest conversations and address their particular race-related issues and concerns. Sessions will begin and end together, and emphasis will be placed on follow-up opportunities for cross-racial- and further identity-based conversations.

These workshops will provide a critical starting point for reflecting on and exploring of how white supremacy affects education across CUNY’s campuses, and how, as teaching fellows and adjuncts, we can combat racism’s effects. The work of these workshops will be further supported by events through the Teaching and Learning Center and the Social Justice Pedagogy Committee.

Funding for these workshops has been generously provided by the Advanced Research Collaborative (ARC), the Futures Initiative (FI), the English Department, and the English Students Association (ESA).
