Cultivating a Public Voice for Your Research
02/28/2017
4:00 pm – 6:00 pm in room 9206

Digital media technologies have become increasingly important in academic life, offering both new opportunities and new challenges. Digital technologies provide academics an array of platforms on which to share their work, broaden its reach, gain recognition and involve a range of stakeholders. At the same time, such technologies raise concerns for researchers about how legacy academic institutions value (or do not) such work, while also potentially making them vulnerable to political attacks.

This panel event brings together prominent public-facing academics across disciplines to discuss best practices for GC students to cultivate a public voice for their scholarship through innovative ways of conceiving, communicating, and connecting their research to broader audiences. Panelists will discuss strategies and mindsets that students can use to publicize their research through blogs, op-eds, social media and digital repositories. Panelists include GC alumna

Dr. Kara Alaimo (Communications at Hofstra),

Dr. Katina Rogers (the Futures Initiative at GC), and

Dr. Jessie Daniels (Sociology at GC). The event will be moderated by Polly Thistlethwaite, Chief Librarian at the GC.
