The Interdisciplinary Conversations Committee, with funding from a generous donor, invites applications for participants in a student/faculty discussion seminar in the fall of 2025 on the theme of “Challenges of Migration and Belonging in NYC:  Interdisciplinary Conversations.”

We define this program broadly and we are interested in faculty working on projects related to this topic from a wide variety of social science and humanities approaches. We seek applications that explore the many ways in which newcomers and long-time New Yorkers explore what it means to “belong” (or not) in New York and in the U.S. We are particularly interested in applicants whose research addresses issues faced by migrants and migrant communities under the new federal administration. In addition, we welcome applicants from faculty working on artistic representations of the challenges of migrant experience.

Faculty from all CUNY campus are welcome to apply. Participants chosen will receive $2,000 in research funding. In the case of Community College faculty, we may be able to negotiate a course release instead of the research funding. Students will receive course credit under an IDS course number for participating in the seminar. Student participants will include but are not limited to those who received research support for work on this topic in summer 2025. Students must be level II or Level III.

The seminar will meet weekly in the fall 2025 semester, on Wednesdays at 4:15-6:15.

Faculty applicants should send a statement of interest, a short description of your work (not more than two pages), and a cv to [email protected]  Please put “ID Conversations Application” in the subject line.
